- The genotoxin colibactin is produced by polyketide synthase-positive E. coli and induces DNA double-strand breaks in vitro and in vivo. It increases tumor formation in vitro alone, or in co-colonization with ETBF in FAP patients. (1)
- Cloibactin form interstrand cross-links by alkylation of adenine residues on opposing strands of DNA.
- Cloibactin is produced in small quantities and is unstable so that cell-to-cell contact is required for genotoxic effects. (2)
